CASE STUDY
TechnipFMC Select Pisys for Global Vessel Management System
Summary
TechnipFMC, a world leader in project management, engineering and construction for the energy industry, selected Pisys to develop a complex multi-vessel management system for their global fleet of offshore construction, diving and pipelay vessels.
Background
TechnipFMC is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies, delivering projects ranging from deepwater subsea developments to the largest offshore and onshore infrastructure programmes. Their global fleet of specialist vessels supports offshore construction, diving and pipelay operations across multiple regions.
Challenge
Managing operations across a global fleet of specialist vessels demands robust, reliable software that works seamlessly across satellite communications networks, multiple time zones and project teams spread across the world. TechnipFMC required a vessel management system that could consolidate daily marine operations reporting, project operational reporting and personnel on board tracking into a single enterprise platform.
The system needed to handle the complexities of satellite communications, track personnel embarking and disembarking from vessels in real time, and integrate with TechnipFMC’s formal IT and business project management frameworks. It also needed to evolve alongside the business — adapting to new requirements and changing specifications without disrupting ongoing operations.
Solution
Pisys developed a bespoke Offshore Reporting and POB (Personnel on Board) system for TechnipFMC’s global fleet. The system covers three core functions:
Daily marine operations reporting
Structured daily reporting of asset delivery and marine operations, giving management visibility of vessel activity across the fleet in a consistent format.
Project operational reporting
Project-level operational data captured and reported in real time, enabling project teams and stakeholders to monitor progress and identify issues as they arise.
Personnel on board tracking
Real-time tracking of personnel embarking and disembarking from vessels, providing accurate POB data for safety management and emergency response planning.
The system has evolved significantly over the years as satellite communications have improved. What began as a system to assemble POB details and vessel operations data for email distribution has developed into a seamlessly integrated enterprise platform that supports TechnipFMC’s global operations day in, day out.
Pisys works within TechnipFMC’s formal project management framework, maintaining regular contact with both the IT project management team and business stakeholders up to senior management level, ensuring the system continues to meet operational requirements and aligns with strategic direction
Result
The Pisys vessel management system has become a core part of TechnipFMC’s global vessel operations infrastructure. The reliability and flexibility of the system, combined with Pisys’ responsiveness and willingness to rework when required, has underpinned a relationship spanning many years.
Ian Hindmarsh, Digital Projects Portfolio Manager at TechnipFMC, describes the value of the relationship:
“Pisys’ adeptness at solving technical challenges is one of the reasons we have continued using them through the years. We rely on a robust suite of enterprise tools to keep our global vessel operations running smoothly day-in day-out.”
“When all’s said and done, Pisys handle things pretty well. No software development project runs totally smoothly, but they’ve consistently risen to all the challenges they’ve faced.”
TechnipFMC also use the Pisys Permit to Work system across their vessel operations, read the full case study here.
